Sunday 12 Jan.

I came to the school library with Mr Wang in his car. He was reading in the library preparing for his coming tests and I began to read news on the net. I was very glad that I had finished typing all the past journals from Nov. 15 to the present day.

Monday 13 Jan.

Chris gave us a lesson on listening teaching in the morning. He listed some of the ways of the teaching and recommended some books for us to read.

When the lesson was over, it was 12 o’clock. I had no lesson this afternoon. So I decided to finish typing the last part of the past journals and to read news on the net. At this time of the day, there were not many students in the computer room.

Recently, Yanmei and Zhu often asked me to help them how to cook delicious dishes. Today, I helped them cook a plate of curry beef, curry chicken, liver slices with cucumber, spring bean sprouts with hot pepper and red fried pork etc. They all enjoyed the dishes, especially Anqi, who often said that these dishes could only be eaten in a restaurant. Mr Wang suggested that I go to open a restaurant here and could earn a lot.

Yanmei asked me for help on the new year’s day for she was going to invite some friends to supper on that very day. I told her it was no problem and it was easy for me to do it.

Tuesday 14 Jan.

Class begins at 10:00 in the morning this term. Sarah went on giving us two lessons on listening skills. During the class she often asked us to discuss some questions in groups. It’s a good practising time.

This afternoon I had the first tutorial with Chris. The main topic was Family. We seven students asked different questions about families in the UK.

After the tutorial it was three o’clock. It was still early to go home. So I went to check my mail and found there was an email from Snow. She had got my poem Song of Love. As I had expected, she would be moved as well as the other readers if they would be able to read it. Here is the mail she replied:

Subject: song of love Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 14:01:16 +0800

Dear Treasure

So nice to receive your "song of love". I look it as soon as I understand your heart. I connot refrain from tears during my reading it, that is why I feel both happy and XinSuan.

I look up a word in the dictionary as I see what you mean, I make I slowy clam down.

Yours

Snow

I am counting the days to be back. Home is better than any other place, especially when the Spring Festival is coming near, but I have to stay here for another three months, watering for the nice seafood and the wonderful strong wine in Ningbo.

I have drunk up some bottles of the strong wine here, which are nice to the flavour, but it is very expensive. The grape wine is much cheaper, but I don't like it very much.

Wednesday, 15 January 2003

This morning Chris gave us two lessons on listening practice skills. Here are some sub-skills of listening:

    Listening for specific information

    Listening for general idea/gist

    Listening for inference

    Listening for discourse markers

    Listening for mood, emotions etc.

    Listening for functions

Such progress may be done during a listening class:

Listen and answer the questions

Listen, (read the menu, and work out the bill)

Listen, and fill in the blanks or charts

Listen and choose if these statements are true or false

Listen and match/sequence/order these pictures or these jumbled sentences

Listen and tick (the food on the menu)

Listen and correct the mistakes

Class was over at 12. I had no lesson this afternoon. So I stayed in the computer room to read news. Thanks to the computer, I could spend much time getting information and killing time.

Snow’s mail came to me again:

Subject: like to read

Date: Wed, 15 Jan 2003 12:51:28 +0800

Dear Treasure

So nice to read your poem. This time I am easy to understand it. Now I don't feel sad for your love and your emails.

Anyway, you will be back soon. I will see you after three months, but I should be happy all day.

Yours

Snow

I sent her my reply with another poem What is Heart written on Nov. 26 and said that I was missing her and everything was OK with me. At three o’clock I went to the library.

I went home before 5. Mr Wang had an examination this evening. His wife and Zhu went to work in a company every evening to do some cleaning work for two hours. So Anqi was left at home with my taking care of her. At half past eight they all arrived home.

Now it is so quiet every night. It was particularly quiet tonight for I was kept awake reading a book called A Course in Language Teaching. It is a very useful book for my career.

Thursday, 16 January 2003

Sarah continuously gave us a lesson on listening practice in the morning. It’s

interesting that she listed five words “dog, toilet, book, bamboo, bicycle” on the blackboard. She asked ten volunteers to come out of the classroom to complete a story with the five words and she told the others the original story. It was a true story about her friend. The topic of the story was The Worst Journey. Here is the story she told.

One day her friend was on the journey to Hanoi, capital of Vietnam. He didn’t manage to buy a sleep train ticket, but only an ordinary ticket. It was supper time when he got on the train. He came to the reserved seat but found there were a big family of Vietnamese with all the belongs in the compartment. He told them there was his seat by gesture but they didn’t understand him and didn’t move a bit. Her friend was a very tall man, so he lifted his legs to cross over some luggage and could finally find his seat but he couldn’t fit his feet on the floor because there were some boxes. He had to put on his feet on those boxes. Just then he saw a man throw a bag on the floor. There was something moving in the bag with the sound of “Wo, Wo, Wo”. There must be several small dogs that were making terrible noises.

Near his seat there was a toilet. The door of the toilet kept swaying, open and closed, closed and open, terrible smell kept assailing his nostrils. He couldn’t bear it any more and got out of a book ready to read forgetting all about this. But he found it was the last chapter. So he read it very slowly and finished it in 40 minutes. Now there was nothing to do but sleep. Suddenly he found an old woman sitting on the opposite staring at him now and then, chewing something like a bamboo and spitting. He tried to go to sleep but the old woman kept chewing and spitting. He really had a terrible time. Finally he saw through the window of the train many bicycles on the road. The train had nearly got to Hanoi. But to his surprise, all the bicycles were running much faster than his train. It took him 8 hours to cover the 200 kilometres. That was his worst journey. No place to fit his feet, terrible barking of the dogs, bad smells from the toilet, the last chapter of his book, the old woman chewing and spitting the bamboo and bicycles moving faster than the train, were all his unforgettable experience.

After Sarah told the story, the ten volunteers came in, each to find two persons to form a group to tell the compiled story. Then the two persons told him or her the original story. The compiled stories were also very interesting. The story I heard was:

A young lady leading her dog walked in a park, with a book under her arm. Suddenly a boy riding a bicycle hit her on the leg making it bleed. The dog was barking loudly and her book fell on the ground. The boy escaped soon leaving the lady alone with the leg still bleeding. She was in great pain and could finally find a toilet made of bamboo in the park. She went in and bandaged her wound with her handkerchief to stop the bleeding. It was really a worst journey.

We listened to the stories and told the true story. It was a good exercise of practice listening and speaking.

Chris also provided us with an activity. He asked us to draw a picture according to what he told.

There are two hills in the middle of the picture. Behind the two hills there is a sea which can be seen between the two hills and outside the hills. There is a boat on the sea. The sun was on the top left hand of the picture with a cloud hiding the upper side of it. On the top right hand of the hill there is a church and on the top left hand of the hill there are five tall trees. A farmer house can be seen in the valley. There is a winding path from the house to the church. A big road is running down right hand of the picture. There is a stream in the middle half down of the picture, making the road a bridge. A man is walking on the bridge of the stream.

Now who can draw the best picture? Exchange them among students. So it is also a good exercise.

In the afternoon I had a tutorial with Chris. The topic was Education system in the UK.

After the tutorial I first typed yesterday’s journal and then read BBC news. I read some news that a terrible bomb blast in a hotel in Shanxi killed at least 6 people and making 30 injured. It was reported to be a chemical fertilizer bomb. Policemen were further investigating the matter.

Now such terrible things can often be heard in China. They might be caused by the dissent and hostility of some people to the government, but what to do with those victims?

The latest news came to me that government officials’ salaries could be raised again. I hope it includes teachers.

It’s twenty past one. I have to go to sleep now.

Friday, 17 January 2003

I have never been so relaxed since I began to work in 1981. The life here is so easy. Learn and read. Read and write. Go surfing on the net. I have plenty of time to read what I like and nothing will disturb me.

Most of the time I shut myself either in the library or at home. I planned to jump into the society to make more friends and practice English, but I feel more independent to do my own business. I think three months is enough for me. It makes no difference if now I am sent back home. But I have to be here for more than two months. Anyway, such a relaxing time is not much for me after I come back home.

My son told me that he did well in the final examination. Science 116 scores ranked the first, Chinese 91 ranked the second and maths 99 ranked ninth, eight of his classmates got 100. He didn’t know the result of English yet. He said it was good too.

Saturday, 18 Jan

As usual I went to the library computer room to get information about the latest news. I knew the war between the US and Iraq would soon break out.

At 13 o’clock, Snow sent me the visa bills of this month. Altogether more than $950. I didn’t believe it could have been so much. So I left the computer room and went home to check my bills. I couldn’t understand the bills at all. I summed up my bills which were much less than $950. I have to check these next Monday to make sure if my visa card is working properly.

At 15 o’clock, Mr. Wang took me in his car to Sainsbury with his family to do weekly shopping. I couldn’t resist the temptation of English wine. I thought it’s a fool not to enjoy life especially in a strange place. And I thought it’s more than a fool when there is good wine to one’s flavour and he doesn’t like to taste it. So I bought a bottle of vodka 1.5 litre with the price of £14.99. I bought the weekly food including a large chicken, pork steak rasher and some vegetables. So you can see, I enjoyed a good dinner.
