Tuesday  15 Oct. 2002

I got up at 3:30 and could no longer get to sleep. I just stayed in my bed reading English newspapers. At seven thirty, breakfast was served and I had a glass of water, milk and orange juice and some pieces of toast.

At 8:05 we got to the bus stop and started to go to school. First I took Bus 88 which took 40 minutes to get to Victoria Centre, then changed Bus 33A to the university. It took half an hour. Then I should walk for some distance to my classroom.

We had our lessons at ten. First we were required to fill another form. And then our teachers, Mike and Chris gave us a topic to practise oral English. The teaching method was good. The tutor, Chris Pearson first gave each pair a short passage with some true and false information about the teachers. He asked each pair to do dictation, one student read, the other wrote down. After that, he asked us to raise questions about the passages. Through questions, true information was collected. Finally we were required to rewrite the passages with true facts. It is really a very good method.

At twelve we were dismissed. I went to Green Cuisine in the Union Shop to have lunch. I ordered mixed vegetables, a sandwich and some rice with egg, tomato etc. The lunch cost me £2.46. We had a long time to spend after lunch. So I walked around the university to get further familiar with it. I bought an International Phone Card.

The weather was so changeable. It was raining all the time and the wind was blowing hard. It was much colder than Ningbo for this time of the year. However, inside the room it was warm. So for one time I felt cold when I was outside, but for another time when I was inside I was sweating. I became changeable like the weather.

I have got used to the life style of English. People here are warm-hearted. Whenever you have trouble in finding the way you can ask anyone for help. And you will be sure to get help.

The deepest impression left me in my mind is people here are very polite. They wait in the queue in all the public services, such as waiting for a bus, handling a bus card, posting letters and many other cases. They never make noises. Though they haste their way, they often give way to others.

This afternoon at two o’clock, we were divided into two groups, one group were led by Mike to the Jubilee Library which is in another campus. There are four campuses in the university. We are studying in the main campus. The other group led by Chris went to Main Library that is in the university. I was in the first group. We went to catch the school bus called Hopper. It was crowded for so many of us. So we decided to walk. We started our way in the rain. It took us more than 20 minutes to get to the library. The library was so peculiarly designed with a round shape. There are many books inside. It was silent. You couldn’t hear anyone talking in it. All the people there were reading books, looking for what they wanted and writing something. We were just shown around the library. Since we hadn’t got a library card, we couldn’t use it now.

At half past 3 we were dismissed. Feng, the teacher from Jinhua, asked me to go to the Victoria Centre to have a tour. We took Bus 28. After we got off, we first went to the post office to get some information about the phone card and to know something about sending letters. Then I went to the booth to buy SIM card for my mobile and it worked. But when I asked the cost of phoning home in China, I gave up buying it. I was told it was 80 pennies per minute, RMB 11 yuan, which was too expensive for a poor student as me.

I was rich in China but suddenly became poor in the UK. I should count every penny to pay for my daily use since I didn’t take many cashes with me. I’d better use a phone card, which may cost less.

We went to mobile shops, clothes shops and some other places.

At  16:40 we caught Bus 88 home. Her host family was on the same way as mine, but it was much nearer, called Mapperley Park, while my host family was in Top Valley, farthest north in the city.

At 17:10 I got home. Ken and Janet were cooking our dinner.

Half an hour later, a typical English dinner was offered, 4 potatoes, some slices of carrot, several beans and a piece of pork were all my dinner. So compared with our Chinese, it was so simple. I wondered if all the families in England had their dinner like this. I asked for an apple after the meal. So did Chen. English people are stupid if they eat just that less.

After that, Janet and I sat in the sitting room, watching TV, reading newspapers and talking while the two smokers sat in the kitchen with the door shut to prevent the smoke coming out into the other rooms.

At half past seven I said good night to Janet and Ken. I went upstairs to my own room. Chen came soon too.
