Sunday 15 Dec. 2002

It has rained for several days without stop. I had planned to go to the computer room to type my journals. I thought it was good for me to finish typing them. Maybe I would have some of them published in some magazines.

Monday 16 Dec. 02

I had a very unlucky afternoon. After lunch, Feng and I went to the city centre to buy camcorders. I had been to two shops where my visa card was rejected. I telephoned Sister Lan about that. She said that it ought to be no problem. So I wanted to buy it in the largest shop in Nottingham and I hoped that this time my visa card would be available.

When we both arrived there, Julie, the lady from whom many of us bought the camcorder, warmly received us. She promised to give us a formal receipt next month so that we could return our VAT back before we went back to China. We each bought a camcorder attached a bag, an extra battery, 12 tapes, two adapters and was ready to pay. Feng paid cashes for them, altogether £570. I gave my visa card to her. But to my great surprise, it was rejected again. You couldn’t imagine how annoyed I was at that time. Julie was very kind. She phoned the bank to see if the card was OK. But she was told that it was not authorised.

Feng said that she could lend me some money to buy it but must wait till tomorrow, because she had already taken the money from the ATM to the limited sum today. I was so sad then. I had never been in dive straits but this time. I had to say sorry to Julie and told her to keep the packet of these and that I would come to her tomorrow.

I went out of the shop and phoned Sister Lan again. She found it strange too and said that early tomorrow she would check it for me.

Sister Lan helped me to handle the card. She wanted me to be a VIP and could buy things more easily and freely. She said that it was a symbol of VIP to hold a visa card. However, she would never think of the embarrassment of mine without more cashes with me while I couldn’t use the visa card, so-called a symbol of VIP.

I am going to Europe next Monday. If I used my limited cashes to buy the camcorder, how should I pay for the other expenses? I had to borrow some money from others. You see, such a VIP has to be in such a situation. Go damn the visa card!

However, I should thank Sister Lan. She didn’t know that it would be like this. And I hope that the card will be OK tomorrow afternoon after she checks it for me.

Feng asked me to accompany her to buy leather shoes. I had no interest at all but I didn’t want to discourage her. She selected a pair and I told her they were nice. She took No. 77 bus home and I took Bus 34 to the university.

Tuesday 17 Dec.

It was nice to see Mike better in health. He gave us nearly three lessons on teaching methods. He prepared the lessons very well and gave us very useful materials. This afternoon it was also Mike’s turn to be our tutor. We talked about the teaching methods in the tutorial.

After the tutorial I went to the city centre with Feng to buy the camcorder again. Sister Lan typed $2500 on my visa card. I wanted to have another try and bought a good camcorder since I had paid a lot of time and energy for it.

When we got to the Dixen Shop, Julie was still in service. I gave her my visa card but was rejected once more. So I had to borrow 200 pounds from Feng and bought a less expensive one cost £499, with the attached material, altogether £570, which equals RMB about 7200 yuan. I had planned to buy another model with the price £699 if I could pay for it with my visa card. It has more functions and much smaller. Now I have no pounds in hand after I used the borrowed money to exchange the Euros. It is lucky that the card can afford my daily expense or I couldn’t have bought the camcorder. I hope it can work in Europe too, so that I will really feel the sense of being a VIP.

The whole evening I studied the camcorder. First I charged the two batteries. Then I read the instruction book. Finally I tried to record something, it was OK. Now when I go to Europe, I can record lots of good scenery. I have missed some of the best one in England. Thanks to my writing, I kept some impression in my journals.

Wednesday 18 Dec.

It was a fine day today with the sun shining brightly after the long day’s raining. It is said that English weather has set up a new record of weather history. The average sunshine of December is 3 hours every day last year. But this December the average sunshine is only one hour. So this winter is really dim and rainy without the sunlight.

Thursday 19 Dec.

It was students’ feedback this morning. After three students’ performance, Mike gave us a questionnaire test on Christmas. We were divided into 7 groups, each 6. After three turns, my group won the championship.

This afternoon we were free. In fact we had no lessons this term. Tomorrow we were organised to visit Yorkshire. The holiday has begun. I was told that we would start to Europe at 4:35 on Dec. 23rd in the city centre.

Friday 20 Dec.

Today we were organised again to visit Yorkshire. We started our trip at the West Entrance at 9 by coach and arrived at the city at 11.

York City is an old city. We started our tour of the walls from the Museum Garden as the best place. One of the most important parts of the Roman defences--- the Multangular Tower--- can be seen there. It was probably built during the reign of the Emperor Severus who was in York between 209 and 211. The tower has 14 sides and is nine metres tall. There would originally have been three floors on the inside and a roof on top. Only six metres of this surviving masonry are Roman!

There are several old bars in York, Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar, Fishergate Bar etc. a lot of towers stand there too. When we crossed the modern road bridge over the river Foss, we say York Castle on our right handside. The castle was built by the king.

The best and grandest building we saw today was York Minster: A place of prayer and worship.

The nave, begun in 1291 and finished in the 1350’s in the Decorated Gothic style, is one of the widest Gothic naves in Europe. It is used for services throughout the year. The pulpit on the left commemorates Archbishops Temple and Lang. The brass lecturn has been used since 1886.

The roof Bosses along the centre line of wooden vaulting portray scenes in the life of Christ and his mother Mary.

The Jesse Window (circa 1310) depicts Jesus’ family tree with his ancestor Jesse at the bottom. David above, then Solomon, Mary and Jesus at the top. Other ancestor and prophets are alongside.

The Central Tower and Crossing was rebuilt in the 15th century in the Perpendicular style. The central boss in the ceiling depicts the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul.

The boss in the Quire entrance depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The Minster is a Christian church and really very holy and classically made.

Here is a Prayer of Alcuin of York (8th century)

Eternal light, shine in our hearts,

Eternal goodness, deliver us from evil,

    Eternal power. Be our support,

Eternal wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance,

Eternal pity, have mercy on us,

That with all our heart and mind and soul and

Strength we may seek thy face.

And be brought by thine infinite mercy to thy

    Holy presence.

                                           Amen

That was the first day I used the camcorder to take pictures. I am not good at it.

At about half past 5 we were back. I went to the computer room to check if there was an email and then went home.

Saturday 21 Dec.

It was Saturday again. I posted a letter to my superior Mr. Wu and Xiang in the city telling them simply about my life and study here. There is a Chinese poem inside. In order not to forget it, I copy down here.

I was told that it was the last morning to use the library and computer room today. The whole school would be closed for Christmas holidays. I thought that I hadn’t finished typing my last month’s journals, so I hurried to type them.    I had to go home. After quick lunch, I went to Chillwell Church to attend a party organised by Chinese Students Association, where I saw a Chinese film called Charging Out Amason.

After that I went to Sainsbury to buy some beef and eggs. I wanted to cook the beef and eggs and would take them on the way to Europe. The first time I bought a bottle of Vodca, strong wine.

We were going to have a home party this evening. At 7 o’clock we all gathered together, Wang’s family, Zhu and I . I was the main cook. We five people had a nice supper. Mr Wang drank beer and I drank Vodca. The ladies drank a little grape wine. They all wished me to have a good journey in Europe.

Sunday 22 Dec.

I got up late in the morning. As soon as I went down stairs. Anqi, the little girl, sent me a card with the words TU BO BO on and a box of milk chocolate. I was very glad to receive the gift she sent me. She was a lovely little girl. She could play the piano well and already passed the Grade Four of the National level. She could speak good English though she was only ten. And she has known a lot of words. Now she is learning New Concept English Book 3. She likes Chinese calligraphy. So I teach her how to write good Chinese. She likes me very much.

At 12 o’clock I was invited to Anqi’s Chinese School. There were about 40 parents with their children there. It was a school especially for Chinese children to learn Chinese. Every family today prepared at least one dish and put it on the large tables to share for lunch.

The party began. First every child gave a performance. Then they were having lunch together. It was too warm inside. I felt hot. So I told Yanmei that I would go home earlier, of course, after Anqi’s performance.

The whole afternoon I thought about what to take to Europe and had got everything ready.

Now I have to go to bed. Six hours later, Mr Wang will send me to the city centre in his car at 4:20 in the early morning. We are going by coach.
